But there are few items that have seen a rate of increase as rapid as that of the humble egg, which has soared in price by up to 60% in the past 12 months. But, while much of the other increases can be put down to inflation, the price of eggs has been increased by another factor. More than 57 million chickens have been affected by an outbreak of avian flu that has decimated poultry farms across the country.
