The façade that Bahrain's autocratic rulers allow free and fair democratic processes has long worn away with years of repression. But in recent years Bahraini authorities' marginalization of any political opposition has expanded into new spheres, utilizing a sophisticated, legal regime aiming to strangle what remains of Bahrain's vibrant, independent civil society. At the heart of the Bahraini state's lawfare against its own citizens' peaceful activism are its political and civil isolation laws passed in 2018.
