ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday dismissed a contempt of court petition filed against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Fawad Chaudhary for his anti-judiciary statements. A single bench of Justice Babar Sattar heard the petition moved by a lawyer, Salimullah Khan, seeking contempt of court proceedings against the PTI leader. During the hearing, the petitioner presented the transcript of Fawad Chaudhry's speeches and contended that the PTI leader had given malicious statements against the judiciary.

KARACHI: Jordan joined the world's humanitarian effort to help Pakistan deal with calamitous floods as its first relief flight landed in Karachi on Wednesday. The aircraft arrived at the Jinnah International Airport in the evening carrying humanitarian aid for flood affectees including food items, clothing, first aid kits, blankets, pillows and tents. The aid, sent by Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation in a C130 aircraft, was handed over to the Pakistan authorities. The Middle Eastern country sent the aid on the order of King Abdullah II.

WASHINGTON: Russia's invasion caused over $97 billion in direct damages to Ukraine through June 1, but it could cost nearly $350 billion to rebuild the country, a report released Friday by the World Bank, Ukrainian government and European Commission shows. ISTANBUL: An explosion in a coal mine in Turkey's northern Bartin province on Friday killed two people and injured 20, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, after local media reported that 49 were trapped. The cause of the explosion was unknown, Turkey's Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said, retracting an earlier statement the explosion was caused by a transformer. Media reports said that the explosion could have been caused by firedamp, a name for flammable gas in coal mines. "According to current information, two citizens died and we have 20 wounded in the explosion that occurred in a coal mine in Bartin," Koca said on Twitter.

NEW DELHI: India has raised a windfall tax on domestically produced crude oil to 11,000 Indian rupees ($133.59) per tonne from 8,000 rupees per tonne from Sunday, a government order said on Saturday. India has also imposed an export tax of 3.50 rupees per litre on jet fuel, the order said. Unprecedented and historical flash floods caused by abnormal monsoon rains have washed away roads, crops, infrastructure and bridges, killing at least 1,000 people in recent weeks and affecting more than 33 million.
