Rebuilding Ukraine after Russian invasion may cost $350bn, experts say
WASHINGTON: Russia's invasion caused over $97 billion in direct damages to Ukraine through June 1, but it could cost nearly $350 billion to rebuild the country, a report released Friday by the World Bank, Ukrainian government and European Commission shows. It said Ukraine had also suffered $252 billion in losses through disruptions to its economic flows and production, as well as extra expenses linked to the war, while the displacement of one-third of all Ukrainians was expected to jack up its poverty rate to 21% from just 2% before the war.

‘Now Hiring': US employers struggle to find enough workers
WASHINGTON: Salespeople, food servers, postal workers – 'Help Wanted' ads are proliferating across the United States, as companies struggle to deal with a worker shortage caused by the pandemic, a rash of early retirements and restrictive immigration laws. More than 10 million openings went unfilled in June, according to government data, while fewer than six million people were seeking work, even as employers desperately try to boost hiring amid a frenzy of consumer spending. 'We have a lot of jobs, but not enough workers to fill them,' the US Chamber of Commerce, which represents American companies, said in a statement.

EU scolds Taliban after crackdown on women's rally
BRUSSELS: The EU on Sunday said it was 'particularly concerned' about worsening conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan after the country's ruling Taliban violently broke up a women's rally. Taliban fighters on Saturday fired in the air and beat up protesters taking part in a women's 'bread, work and freedom' march in Kabul. Some women were chased into nearby shops and hit with rifle butts. The violence underscored the Taliban's increasing restrictions, especially on women, since they seized back control of Afghanistan a year ago, on August 15, 2021.

Saudi stocks slip on weaker oil prices as Qatar consolidates gains
Saudi Arabia's stock market ended slightly lower on Sunday in response to Friday's fall in oil prices, while the Qatari index inched higher to notch up a third consecutive session of gains. Oil prices, a key catalyst for the Gulf's financial markets, had dropped around 2% on expectations that supply disruptions in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico would be short-term, while recession fears clouded the demand outlook. Saudi Arabia's benchmark index eased 0.1%, hit by a 1.2% fall in Riyad Bank and a 0.7% slip in Saudi British Bank.

German fighter jets en route to Australia as Berlin shifts focus to Indo-Pacific
BERLIN: Germany is sending 13 military aircraft to joint exercises in Australia, the air force's largest peacetime deployment, underlining Berlin's increased focus on the Indo-Pacific amid rising tensions with China in the region. Last year, a German warship sailed into the South China Sea for the first time in almost 20 years, a move that saw Berlin joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over Beijing's territorial ambitions. Tensions have also risen over Taiwan since China - which claims Taiwan as its own territory - kicked off military drills around the democratically governed island after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei at the start of August.

KYIV: Moscow denounced sabotage and Ukraine hinted at responsibility for new explosions on Tuesday at a military base in Russian-annexed Crimea that is an important supply line for Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The blasts engulfed an ammunition depot at a military base in the north of the Crimean peninsula, disrupting trains and forcing the evacuation of 2,000 people from a nearby village, according to Russian officials and news agencies. Plumes of smoke were later seen at a second Russian military base in central Crimea, Russia's Kommersant newspaper said, while blasts hit another facility in the west last week.

ISTANBUL: An explosion in a coal mine in Turkey's northern Bartin province on Friday killed two people and injured 20, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, after local media reported that 49 were trapped. The cause of the explosion was unknown, Turkey's Disaster Management Authority (AFAD) said, retracting an earlier statement the explosion was caused by a transformer. TEHRAN: Iran has once again rejected allegations that it has supplied Russia with weapons 'to be used in the war in Ukraine', its foreign ministry said Saturday. Kyiv and many of its Western allies have accused Moscow of using Iranian-made drones in attacks on Ukraine in recent weeks. The topic is expected to be discussed by European Union foreign ministers in a meeting in Luxemburg on Monday. German minister warns Russia could use ‘people as weapons'
BONN: Germany's foreign minister warned Saturday that Russia could seek to spark division in the West through refugees, as Moscow seeks to expand its 'hybrid war'. 'This war is not only waged with weapons, it is also waged with energy and for that, we have found an answer. But it will also be waged with fear and division, and that is precisely what we have to prevent,' said Annalena Baerbock at a congress of her Greens' party. 'In this situation it is clear what will be next – refugees and not refugees from Ukraine… but because this war is hybrid, other countries are also participating,' Baerbock said, pointing to Serbia which she accused of letting in planeloads of migrants without visas.

LONDON: Britain's new finance minister on Saturday warned of looming tax hikes as he admitted to 'mistakes' made in a disastrous budget that still threatens to bring down Prime Minister Liz Truss. 'Truss fights for survival,' The Times newspaper headlined a day after she forced chancellor of the exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng to carry the can for market turmoil sparked by their budget on September 23. The Times, Telegraph and other newspapers reported that senior Conservative members of parliament were still plotting to unseat Truss, possibly within days, aghast at the party's collapse in opinion polls since she replaced Boris Johnson on September 6.

Initial economic losses from Pakistan floods at least $10bn
ISLAMABAD: The initial economic losses from floods in Pakistan could reach at least $10 billion, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal told Reuters in an interview on Monday. Unprecedented and historical flash floods caused by abnormal monsoon rains have washed away roads, crops, infrastructure and bridges, killing at least 1,000 people in recent weeks and affecting more than 33 million. 'I think it is going to be huge. So far, (a) very early, preliminary estimate is that it is big, it is higher than $10 billion,' Iqbal said.
