EdCom II should probe, stop rampant mass promotion immediately
Three months after two major education advocacy groups namely the Philippine Business for Education and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers denounced mass promotion or the practice of advancing students to the next grade without requiring them to meet specific academic standards, there is yet no concrete move on the part of the concerned entities to address the issue. If the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EdCom II) follows the lead of co-chair Sherwin Gatchalian, most likely the action that will be taken by the commission which happens to be the most logical body to address the issue will be futile.

Proposed minimum monthly wage hike to benefit 1.79 million workers: Ministry
Taipei, Sept. 8 (CNA) Taiwan's proposed wage hike of 4.05 percent in the minimum monthly wage reflects price rises of daily necessities -- the most significant in recent years -- and is expected to benefit 1.79 million workers, the Ministry of Labor (MOL) said on Friday. If approved by the Cabinet, the monthly minimum wage will increase from NT$26,400 (US$825) to NT$27,470, according to the MOL. That will benefit 1.79 million workers, including about 341,800 migrant workers, but not migrant caregivers or domestic helpers, whose minimum wage is not covered by Taiwan's Labor Standards Act.

The Peril Of Flying While Intoxicated, Part 1
An FAA Los Angeles Center air traffic controller handling the flight of a Cessna 550 Citation on July 17, 2019, became concerned about the pilot's health after he began slurring his words and seemed unable to comply with her instructions. The controller's transmissions and those of the pilot were recorded by FAA and that recording provides a chilling narrative of how extreme alcohol intoxication can affect a pilot's skills and judgment. The flight departed Tri-Cities Airport (PSC) near Pasco, Washington, at 16:25 Pacific Standard Time (PST).

Private Equity, Nursing Homes Make Lousy Bedfellows
(Newser) – American society is in the early stages of a "silver tsunami," with adults over 65 expected to outnumber children by 2035. Demand for nursing homes will surge, as will revenues for those who operate such facilities, writes Yasmin Rafiei for the New Yorker. It's an irresistible business opportunity for private equity groups and other for-profit companies, which collectively own about 70% of nursing homes. Many states have lax standards, and federal staffing requirements for such facilities are set at one registered nurse during the day and one licensed practical nurse in the evening, regardless of the number of residents.

The rise of supply chain finance in Asia – an oppportunity not to be missed
Cash is king. But what if there's a shortage of it, and it takes your business 30, 60, or even 90 days before getting paid? These kind of payment terms are standard practices between most goods suppliers and buyers in Asia, and it has direct impact on their cash flows and ultimately their financial health. The key to solving this issue could very well be found in the rise of a receivable finance technique called Supply Chain Finance (SCF). Not only does it benefit suppliers, but it also brings great opportunities to their buyers as well as to the banks and financial institutions that facilitate this initiative.
