Movie reviews: 'The Last Voyage of the Demeter,' 'Heart of Stone,' 'Satan Wants You,' 'Passages'
'The Last Voyage of the Demeter,' a new horror film now playing in theatres, is based on the chapter "The Captain's Log" from Bram Stoker's novel 'Dracula.' Told through news clippings and notes from the captain's log of the Demeter, the chapter details the horrifying voyage that brought Count Dracula to England. Haven't read the book? Then think of it as 'Alien' on the high seas. A claustrophobic nineteenth century thriller, it swaps out the commercial space tug Nostromo and Xenomorph creature for the merchant ship Demeter and the most famous vampire of all time.

Provinces could do more on affordability: federal minister
The federal minister of families, children and social development says she agrees is in the midst of an affordability crisis, but wants to see provincial and territorial governments do more to help. 'I think that many families, in particularly lower income families, are really struggling right now to make ends meet,' Karina Gould told CTV's Question Period host Vassy Kapelos, in an interview airing Sunday. 'The high cost of rent, the high cost of food, is having a big impact.' 'And even for folks who are in the middle class, they're feeling the squeeze,' she added.

Claridge cancels planned Hintonburg highrise
A planned highrise condo tower that would have redefined the Hintonburg skyline has been cancelled. The 30-storey Claridge Hintonburg was supposed to be built at 1040 Somerset Street West, a short walk from the Bayview O-Train station. It was to boast unobstructed views of the surroundings, including the Ottawa River. The building would combine 'luxurious, sophisticated design with convenience in the heart of one of Ottawa's trendiest spots,' its website said. But developer Claridge is cancelling the project, a victim of high interest rates, inflation and rising construction costs.

Winter weather prompts reminders to 'Slow Down and Move Over'
First responders on the mid-island are asking for the public to obey 'Slow Down and Move Over' laws, especially in light of this week's heavy snowfall. 'Our safety is our number one concern and it is challenging, especially along the Inland Highway, trying to get people to slow down on a good day,' says Chief Bruce Green of Oyster River Fire Rescue. Rising prices fuel driver frustrations at Ottawa gas stations
Ottawa motorists are fuming over the rise in gasoline prices, following a 15 cent a litre increase over the past five days. And industry experts are warning motorists should brace for a summer of expensive fill-ups, with prices hovering in the $1.80 to $1.90 a litre range. 'It's ridiculous, just ridiculous,' said Luigi Vigliotti as he filled up the gas tank on Sunday. Vigliotti says his truck remains parked more often now, due to the high cost of gasoline. "I bought myself a little Toyota Yaris to go to work with instead of a truck just because of all of the mileage I do during the week for work,' Vigliotti said.

As the International Plowing Match (IPM) continues in North Grenville, the plowing competition was winding down on Friday in a field about 10 kilometres west of the tented city.  There, you'll find around 100 people competing in the cold fall wind, like Scott Thomas.  It isn't easy work, he says. It's tradition. "My father plowed and there was another fellow that plowed from Lindsay area that used my father's horses all the time, and he's actually the one that got me started," Thomas said, his two-horse team resting behind him.

Fewer meals out, more unhealthy choices: A poll looks at how inflation is impacting eating habits in B.C.
Cutting back on dining out, limiting trips to the coffee shop and choosing cheaper, less healthy options are some of the ways a new survey finds that British Columbians are changing their eating habits amid rising food costs. The poll, conducted by Research Co., found that the overwhelming majority of those asked reported having adjusted their spending on food over the last two months. The results, released Wednesday, found just 14 per cent of people said they have made no changes. "We have a lot of people who say, 'I'm not going to the coffee shop as often as I used to, I'm not buying lunch on a weekday, I'm not going out to dinner on a weekend,'" pollster Maria Canseco told CTV News.

Why food prices will continue to rise in Manitoba next year: report
Food prices in Canada will continue to rise in the new year, according to a new study. The 13th edition of Canada's Food Price Report – released Monday – said that overall, food prices will increase by five to seven per cent next year. "In 2023, it is expected that Canadians will continue to feel the effects of high food inflation, and food insecurity/affordability will also be a big issue with rising food prices," said the report. Canada's Food Price Report is compiled every year, a collaboration between Dalhousie University, the University of Guelph, the University of Saskatchewan, and the University of British Columbia.

The crash happened just before 3 p.m. on April 17, on Highway 7, near Varty Road, in Tweed, Ont. Ontario Provincial Police say the 47-year-old driver of an SUV, travelling eastbound, was stopped to turn left on Varty Road when another driver struck the SUV from behind. It was unusual for Nargis Masoud's mother to let her stay awake after 9 p.m., otherwise the Grade 9 student might be late for school the next day. But on March 23 last year, Nargis stayed awake all night, crying. Nargis's mother informed her earlier that day the Taliban had banned girls from attending school in Afghanistan beyond sixth grade. 'I felt heartbroken, and I cried all night. It was like I was not supposed to meet my classmates and teachers again.' Nargis told CTVNews.ca. Three million girls have been deprived of secondary education since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August 2021, according to UNICEF.
