Finding solutions to tackle electronic waste crisis

Finding solutions to tackle electronic waste crisis
My name is David Butita, an environmentalist from Kibabii Village in Bungoma County. I launched a sustainable E-waste management initiative that collects and refurbishes electronic devices like computers for my community. E-waste refers to electronic products that are unwanted, not working, and nearing or at the end of their useful life. When electronics end up in landfills, toxics like lead, mercury, and cadmium leach into the soil and water. The lack of proper facilities for hazardous fractions is challenging, but I believe the private sector help tackle the e-waste crisis.

Dorcas Rigathi: Why the boy child must be empowered
One evening in the 1990s while driving home from work, Dorcas Rigathi recalls an incident where street boys stopped her along Nairobi's Uhuru Highway. She did not think twice, she just stopped. In those years, Nairobians feared street boys due to their bad behaviour. They would harass residents while demanding money or food. Those who refused to comply would be smeared with human faeces. When Ms Rigathi stopped and rolled down her car windows, the young men were shocked, she says. 'The boys literally froze…they didn't expect me to stop.

Teen pregnancy: Picking the pieces after shattered dreams
Teen pregnancies have continued to stifle girl-child empowerment despite robust initiatives to address the crisis. A few weeks ago, the Nation reported about a 16-year-old girl who was rescued from a forced marriage in Kathangacini location in Tharaka North Sub-County. The stigma associated with becoming a teen mom worsens the crisis as families choose to keep the ‘embarrassing' issue hush-hush. The girls who become pregnant are vulnerable to mental anguish from self-blame and isolation from those who matter the most — family and peers.

UoN dons demand clarity on leadership after Stephen Kiama return
The unexpected return from leave of University of Nairobi vice-chancellor Professor Stephen Kiama continues to cause confusion in the institution, with a section of the teaching staff yesterday demanding clarity on the leadership. Former chapter secretary George Omondi said the silence by the council on the matter has left the entire teaching fraternity at a loss as they do not know whether to follow instructions from Prof Kiama or Prof Julius Ogeng'o, who was appointed to act as VC. Council chairperson Amukowa Anangwe has not publicly spoken about the issue.

How to demystify customer experience for top gains
Over the last four months, we have been discussing customer experience. It is extensively studied yet commonly misunderstood. In demystifying customer experience, three key issues stand out so far.  First, most businesses fail to recognise that customers are human beings; second, many leave customer experience to chance; and finally, there is a need to fix customer experience to survive.  Customers are People First: We are in the business of people. Whether we are offering a product or a service, people are at the centre.

Play lays bare the human foibles of the political elite
Plays on controversial political environments and governance, which once ruled theatres, are rare today.  A Country Funeral (Uganda), is one of the latest creations that take the audience on a journey of reflection on leadership, society and generational conflict. Written by Brenda Nakyejjwe Tendo, and directed by Brenda Ibarah, the play's live reading debut was recently hosted by Ndere Cultural Centre in Kampala, Uganda, as part of the 2022 Kampala International Theatre Festival (KITF). Starring Bryan Byamukama, Eronie Bazongere and Keith Victor Muganza, the play introduces us to three characters — Jacob, David and Anna — and revolves around the preparation for the burial of Jacob's wife Kirabo, the country's first lady, and wife to Jacob, the President.

Kenya to the world: Africa will bring solutions, not beg for aid
Between September 4 and 6, Kenya will host the Africa Climate Summit, the first time in climate change discourse history that Africa shows her potential in helping the world deal with climate change. President William Ruto and the Africa Union Commission leadership will lead the continent at the Summit in showcasing Africa's green energy potentials, which range from solar, wind and hydro. Energy that if tapped, would power the world and minimise greenhouse gas emissions. At the Summit, we will ask African countries to come and display their critical minerals potential.

Milk intake at 40-month low as high prices put-off consumers
The intake of milk by Kenyan households dropped to the lowest level in more than three years in March after milk prices shot up due to low production, hurting purchases in an economy subdued by inflationary pressures. Latest data from the Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) shows milk intake dropped to 52.19 million litres in March – the lowest in 40 months since October 2019 when intake reduced to just 51.3 million litres. This marks the second consecutive monthly drop in milk intake after consumption of the drink fell from 62.

A tale of three cultures: Kenya, Goa and Britain
This is a fabulous read albeit a long one: 394 pages but above all, it is an honest and factual recollection, with no-holds-barred. After all her writing hand is guided by the brilliant lawyer she is. Her pen does not falter at an uncomfortable truth, what others might consider 'too much information". She takes us on a long and winding safari about her life, her parents, grandparents, relatives and friends in Kenya, Goa, Britain and her adventures as a tennis (an 'obsession') player who could have been Kenya's first professional tennis player, the love of her life and then a clinical examination of her path to lawyerdom.

Relax, we shall all graduate at the right time
By Brian Khavalaji It is every parent's dream to see their child graduate, and especially those living in the village. There, a graduation gown gives a family the ultimate bragging rights. The news will be discussed in all gossip hotspots including chamas, busaa joints and church meetings. In fact, from the moment they join college, a student's life becomes a matter of public inquiry. All villagers will keep tabs on your progress. The want to know how your academic life is faring. They send you Sh300 and ask if you received the funds, and then quickly add, 'Na uta graduate lini?' Unknown to them are the struggles you undergo in campus.

Bidco seeks more soybeans, sunflower suppliers
Consumer goods manufacturer Bidco Africa is seeking additional suppliers of soybean and sunflower seeds in a bid to steady the supply of raw materials. Bidco, which manufactures edible oils, soaps, and detergents is looking to buy around 30,000 tonnes of soybeans and sunflower from agripreneurs across the country. The grains will be processed at Bidco's manufacturing unit in Nakuru County to extract cooking oil and the cake made into animal feeds. 'This is an opportunity for Kenyans to grow agribusiness and for entrepreneurs especially the youth and women leaders who can aggregate farmers to come and grow and then we will collect it from the farms,' said Bidco group director Chris Diaz.

How Makueni's reforestation project is leading the war against climate change
Our two-hour drive from Nairobi led us to Emali, a town on both sides of the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway. My team, consisting of our driver, photographer, and myself, was eager to witness a community's efforts at adopting mitigation practices in the face of climate change. Departing the city early allowed us to witness the town's residents beginning their day. Following a phone conversation with the man we intended to meet, he instructed us to wait at a local hotel, where he would join us shortly. Seeking guidance from several motorcycle operators, we were directed to a hotel that had clearly witnessed more prosperous times.

A million Covid vaccine doses ‘to be destroyed'
About a million doses of Covid-19 vaccines may expire soon as Kenyans shun them, the Sunday Nation has learnt. The downward trend in the intake of the shots has led to fears that thousands of doses could go to waste. Many countries are destroying hundreds of thousands of expired and unused Covid-19 vaccine doses. The country currently administers fewer than 200 doses of the vaccine a day, down from 2,000. Most of those getting the vaccine are flying out of the country.

Sources privy to the matter said that PTI will file a plea in the Islamabad High Court on Monday and will also request to remove PEMRA's ban on showing live speech of Imran Khan on TV channels. The army girl who's off to explore higher ground
Mountain running is one of the fastest growing sports disciplines in Kenya. And one of the stars putting Kenya on the world map in this field is Joyce Muthoni Njeru. In mountain running, athletes mainly compete in off-road mountainous terrain, but if there is significant elevation on the route, surfaced roads may be used. It is a mixture of running, jogging and walking, depending on how steep the trail is. The sport is recognised by World Athletics and governed by the World Mountain Running Association.
