LABELLE, FL. -- CDC's latest maps as of Thursday afternoon shows most Florida counties are at "high" COVID transmission levels, as well as counties in the Eastern and Midwest U.S.. Transmission levels stay stubbornly high, with 87% of the U.S. population living in areas with substantial or higher transmission, slightly lower than last week. Rates are higher generally in the South, parts of the Midwest and the East Coast, with lower levels seen in the West, according to the  People's CDC . Hendry now at "high" transmission rates along with Glades, Charlotte and Collier.

Harrison Bader is a Yankee.  This guy exploded on the scene late last season, and he won over the Bronx! His energy and game play is Yankee made, no doubt about it. But the issue with Bader has always been injury. Why? Because the dude does everything hard!  Listen, I won't get on a guy who plays the game hard, but I do worry about Bader long term. That being said, I am thrilled he's in New York and looking forward to him playing with the Yankees this season. But for now, It's "a punch in the face.

LABELLE, FL -- Eliceo Hernandez, arrested on Negligent Manslaughter charges on June 14, 2020, in the shooting death of FWC Officer Julian Keen, is now in trial at the Hendry County Courthouse.  He has been facing charges of Second Degree Murder with a Firearm, Attempted Second Degree Murder While Discharging a firearm, Leaving the Scene of an Accident and Possession of Synthetic Cannabis. The drug charge has been dropped by the State Attorney's Office. In the early morning hours of Monday, June 15, 2020, Hendry County Sheriff's Office, Major Crimes Unit arrested then 20 year old Eliceo Hernandez in the shooting death of FWC Officer Julian Keen, Jr.

When I was quoting from Arthur Quiller-Couch's True Tilda on this blog, I harvested them from the Project Gutenberg plain text version. There you will find this introductory note: This was one of the most enjoyable e-texts that I have prepared but also one of the most difficult. Many of the characters use the working class slang and dialect of 100 years ago and the author sticks to this consistently throughout the book. At times there seems to be as many apostrophes as characters! This attempt to render dialect phonetically was still going strong in the 1950s and is wearing to the modern reader.

Sorry for my long absence from this blog. It's been a heck of a few weeks. My mother-in-law died somewhat unexpectedly in mid-February, and since then it's been a whirlwind of cleaning out her assisted living apartment, making arrangements, flying to Illinois for the burial, then having houseguests upon our return. Not all of that fell on me, of course, but it's been hard to find time to sit and write. The guests are still here and we'll be doing things with them for another week, but I've got a bit of time to myself today so wanted to pop in with a quick update.

Residents have raised with me some questions about the new phone mast at the Stanley Road junction in Sunniside. I had to do some digging. The questions and answers are:When was it granted planning permission - June last year.Who gave it planning permission - officers under delegated powers.Who was consulted - the 14 nearest properties.Typically, phone companies install phone masts quickly after they have been granted planning permission. This time they took 14 months to get the work done. This I suspect has generated the confusion about when it was granted.

LABELLE, FL. -- The number of Florida counties on the CDC's list of "low community level" for COVID-19 is increasing.CDC's latest maps as of Thursday afternoon show most of Florida counties are at "low" levels along with a few in north Florida at "medium" levels.Hendry County is now at low levels after being at HIGH levels for seven in a row previous months.
