Miami Beach officials, residents grapple with spring break violence
Kali9/Getty Images (MIAMI BEACH, Fla.) -- Miami Beach, long the epicenter of fun in the sun for college students' spring break respite, is dealing with an increase in violence including two deadly shootings on the iconic Ocean Drive in the past week. The chaos has left city officials, including Mayor Dan Gelber, at a loss, and has forced the city to declare a state of emergency. 'I don't think any mayor could say, ‘We did everything we could do,' when you have deaths like this. I think that what we have not been able to figure out, and I think where we have failed, is how do we stop spring break from happening?' Gelber told ABC's "Nightline.

Pennsylvania school district sues Norfolk Southern over East Palestine train derailment
Jason Marz/Getty Images (NEW YORK) -- Pennsylvania's Blackhawk School District has filed a lawsuit against Norfolk Southern alleging various causes of action including negligence in last month's train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, and subsequent controlled release of toxic chemicals. The lawsuit, filed Thursday, alleges that the derailment and burning of the contents of the rail cars "caused toxic, hazardous, and dangerous chemicals to be released onto and into the ground, into the air, and into the surface and subsurface waterways and groundwater.

MANDEL NGAN/AFP via Getty Images (WASHINGTON) -- President Joe Biden and Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Friday announced a new migration deal as part of Biden's first visit to America's northern neighbor. The new agreement will allow Canada to send migrants who cross at unofficial ports of entry at America's northern border back to the U.S., a change to the Safe Third Country Agreement long-sought by Canada. The U.S. will also be able to turn back asylum seekers who travel across the border from Canada.

Austin confronts GOP senator for blocking military nominations over abortion policy
Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images (WASHINGTON) -- Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned Tuesday that military readiness could be impaired by the growing list of senior military nominations being blocked by Alabama Republican Sen. Tommy Tuberville over his opposition to a Pentagon abortion policy. "Not approving the recommendation for promotions actually creates a ripple effect with the force that makes us far less ready than we need to be," Austin said responding to a question from Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed, D-R.

Nashville school shooting puts renewed focus on doors, security
Metropolitan Nashville Police Dept. (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- Security video from inside Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, captured the suspect entering the main school building unabated by blasting through two sets of glass double doors and stalking the halls before killing six people, including three children. The security footage, released by police Monday night, raises new concerns over whether schools should have fortified or metal entrance doors that could have deterred or delayed the suspect's entry.

Anti-transgender sentiment follows Nashville shooting
Metropolitan Nashville Police (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) -- After authorities said the Nashville school shooter identified as transgender, anti-trans sentiment about the community surged from far-right political figures. Gun reform advocates and LGBTQ activists say the transgender community is being used as a 'scapegoat' and that focusing on the shooter's reported trans identity is a distraction from what they say is the root of the issue: guns. "Despite what the gun industry and their political allies want, attempting to find a scapegoat isn't going to take away from the fact that what is causing gun violence in America is our easy access to firearms,' said Kris Brown, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

Ramsey County Sheriff's Office (NEW YORK) -- A Minnesota judge sentenced a man to life in prison without parole Thursday for the death of his first wife, 13 years after police said he shot her over their financial troubles and lied to investigators that it happened during a home invasion. Several of Heidi Firkus' friends and family gave emotional victim statements before the judge sentenced her husband Nick Firkus, 40, for his crimes. Hiker killed, two others injured in California mountain avalanche
STOCK PHOTO/Getty Images (BIG PINE, Calif.) -- A summer avalanche took the life of a hiker and injured two others in California, investigators said. The unidentified hiking party encountered a wet slide avalanche while descending Split Mountain on July 2 around 4:30 p.m., the Inyo County Sheriff's Office announced Friday. The hikers had reached the summit of the mountain, located above Red Lake, near Big Pine, California, earlier in the day, according to investigators. None of the hikers were buried in the avalanche; however, it was strong enough to sweep the party onto rocky terrain, the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center said in a statement.

Zelenskyy to ABC: Russia could sabotage nuclear power plant to halt Ukrainian advances
Yuriy Boyko/ABC News (KYIV, Ukraine) -- Russia could stage an explosion at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to halt Ukrainian advances on the battlefield, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned in a wide-ranging new interview with ABC News that was previewed on "World News with David Muir" on Thursday. Speaking to ABC News' Chief Global Affairs Correspondent Martha Raddatz, Zelenskyy addressed fears that the power plant, which is the largest on the continent, could be sabotaged -- with Ukrainian officials sounding the alarm that Russia has allegedly mined the facility in preparation for a false-flag operation to sabotage the plant and blame Ukraine.
